Facebook's New Home Feed: 3 Impactful Changes for Content Marketing

In July 2022, Meta, the company that owns Facebook, said that the home page would be getting some big changes. The old Home page was broken up into two parts: Home and Feeds. Users can find new content and get personalized suggestions from Facebook in the "Home" section, while the "Feeds" tab lets them keep up with their friends and favorite pages and companies.

We're still getting used to the new Facebook layout and all the changes it brings. But have you changed how you market your content to fit? If not, there are three changes you need to know about if you want to market on Facebook.

Why is it important to market on Facebook?

Most businesses are already on Facebook. In fact, 200 million businesses all over the world use the free marketing tools on the site. If your business isn't on that list, it should be.

If you want to reach your audience on social media, you can probably find them on Facebook, no matter what their age, gender, location, or anything else about them is. Facebook has about a third of the world's population, or nearly 3 billion active users every month.

Facebook makes it easy to interact with your audience, which can improve the reputation of your business and turn casual viewers into loyal customers. The platform is also a good way to let people know about sales, specials, events, the release of new products, or anything else they should know.

How have things changed?

Before the changes to the home page, all of a Facebook user's posts were shown on the same home feed. On the same page, there were posts from friends, business pages, sponsored ads, and other things, making it hard to find specific content.

But now, Facebook has two different feeds so that users can make their experience more unique. The change also lets businesses separate their content marketing campaigns based on which feed they want to show up on (we'll get back to that!).

Facebook says this about the change: "Home is where you'll find more people who share your passions and interests, but Feeds is where you can keep up with the people and groups you care about most."

When a person logs into Facebook, the first thing they see is the home page. Users can make posts and reels or see the posts and reels that their friends have made. The home page also uses cutting-edge machine learning technology to rank content based on how relevant and useful it is to each person. This means that each time you scroll, you'll see recommendations that are tailored to you.

On the Feeds page, users can keep up with content they already like. Here, there are no "Suggested for You" posts, but there are ads. Users can mark pages as favorites so they can scroll through their content quickly, or they can look through other Feed categories like Friends, Groups, Pages, and more.

How Would These Changes Affect You?

Now that you know how Facebook has changed, you can figure out how your content marketing strategy should also change.

1. Reaching more people means getting a bigger audience

The new design of the Home tab makes it easier to find things, so your company's ads and profile will automatically be shown to the most likely users. You'll find that your audience grows (or maybe it already has grown) without you doing anything to make it happen.

A few years ago, a Facebook post would only reach about 6% of all the people who liked that page. Facebook has made it much easier to get that valuable organic traffic by giving people a place to look around the platform and learn about new companies and content.

So, it's important to make sure you're making content for the new viewers you'll be getting, which brings us to our next point!

2. Two Feeds = Customized Content for New Viewers and Those Who Have Seen It Before

Users can now look through two feeds on Facebook, so you'll need to make sure that your content is right for each one. People who see your content on their home page are probably seeing your company's work for the first time, while those who see you on their feeds tab have probably already interacted in some way with your brand.

Even if the changes aren't huge, it's a good idea to give new users (the Home tab) and returning users different content (the Feeds tab). There are also ads on the Feeds tab, so you might also want to think about a specific remarketing campaign here.

If you want to go above and beyond, you can use the different parts of the Feeds tab for more than just running ads. For instance, the Feeds tab lets users know what's going on with their groups. You might want to start a group that is both for your audience and for your business.

If you sell cookware, for example, you could start a group for recipe ideas. If you own a bookstore, you could start a Facebook group to run a virtual book club or get people to share their favorite books. In this way, users can interact with your business and build a unique community at the same time.

3. The algorithm gives more weight to useful, relevant content

The internet as a whole is starting to put the user experience ahead of everything else. One example is Google's recent "helpful content update." Facebook is doing the same thing by putting the most valuable and important content for each user first.

When you're making your content strategy, remember to make content based on what your audience wants to see, not what you think the algorithm will like. Not only will you seem more real and human to your audience, but you'll also get more traffic from search engines.

There's a good chance that you'll want to make more content for social media than you did before. Make a content calendar and share it with your coworkers so you can keep track of your ideas, when you plan to post, and how well your posts are doing. For every project, everyone will be on the same page, so nothing will fall through the cracks.
